Inside Look - Characters: Gambit

It was pretty cool when we first learned that we were going to get to have Gambit in our game. Gambit is a strong fighter that contrasts Wolverine in many ways.
Instead of claws, he’s got his staff, which affords us an entirely unique move set. Instead of strength by brute force, he’s got strength tempered with finesse. Instead of bad-assery, he’s got that dangerous charm about him. He also loves to throw him some cards! So expect to eat a deck or two when fighting him.
Animating Gambit was a blast. He’s got attitude, he’s got crazy powers, acrobatics, and he’ll do it all while taunting you with one of his quips. Gambit is a trickster, so we wanted to approach him like that. He won’t necessarily attack you head on and full force. He’ll use his environment to his advantage and try to control the space in which you fight. You are, after all, in his domain: a massive Casino in New Orleans! That gives him the home-court advantage, mon ami.
A quick story that happened while in development: We had just finished hooking up Gambit’s power to manipulate an object’s potential/kinetic energy, charging it up and causing it to explode, when the funniest thing happened.
I loaded up New Orleans to fight against him because I wanted to make a couple small tweaks on a few of his new moves. At the time, his health and powers had not been balanced yet, so he was still a bit on the weak side, and I was able to beat him down rather handedly. As Gambit’s health got lower, he fought with increased tenacity and actually began using his ability to charge objects around the level to use against me. Since that power had just been added to the game that morning, it was the first time I’d ever see him use that against me, and it caught me a little off guard!
He started going crazy, charging anything in sight as his health got down to a sliver. Once he had pretty much blown up everything in sight, he did something that was quite unexpected. As one last act of desperation, he actually knelt down and charged the floor on which we stood. As I sat there, I watched as the floor – then the walls, then the ceilings – all started to light up as the potential energies within them reached critical mass. Seeing no other alternative, he had charged up the ENTIRE level and, in one big explosion, ended the fight for both of us!
Needless to say, we needed to put some limits on Gambit’s abilities. I had to go get one of our programmers (who was busy working on code for all of our menus) to take a look at this glitch. We just finished level three and needed to tighten up the graphics a little bit. Otherwise I may have fixed it myself.

Gambit has always being one of my favourite X-Men characters.
and him in this Wolverine game is huge bonus.

That would be hilarious if Gambit blew up all of the maps in the game, and Wolverine was left floating around in space.

dam i think DLC is calling out to Gambit for a playable later on. i cant be the only one that hears it

gonna hurt a little bit to hand gambits behind to him. But better his then mine,lol. Glad they fixed that part where he starts charging the whole room. Can you imagine how many times you would have to do that fight over and over again,lol. Does sound like a worthy challange though

I second the vote for replaying the game as Sabretooth or Gambit. But everything that I’ve seen so far looks awesome.
It really raises my expectations knowing that the game was in development before being tied into the movie. Great works guys!

im really lookin forward 4 this game to come out not only coz da azz wolverine but also gambit hes one of my fav x men of all i hope they add him into da the game as a playble character i even want to see cyclops.I hope in the future we get to maybe a gambit game he would be an intersting charater i hope they didnt take too much away gambit powers he is after all a omaga mutant (1 of the strongest mutant in the world) well that until sinister colsed up some of his powers. ps...i hoope they da make a gambit game cant wait till the movie comes out

Wow Gambit would make an awesome playable character. I wish I wasn’t the only one who felt that way, but I guess it is a “Wolverine” game. No one would want to play as these other characters but me, I guess. *sigh*

Man the Gambit fight went on forever but I finally beat him, enjoyed the last part of the fight on the large neon letters, very fun.

there’a major bug in the 360 version of the gambit fight atop the big letters. major bug that forces a restart, and happened to me the first 3 times i tried it. happens right after the second qte. booo.

I’m terrified on how they can’t make a descent looking Gambit. He doesn’t look like that in the comic-books, you know?!
