Inside Look – Characters: Blob

Hi, my name is Ryan Butts and I am the Lead Character Artist on the X-Men Origins: Wolverine video game.
I’d like to talk a little bit about the 9-foot-tall behemoth known as the Blob. While the audience gets to know him a bit more in the movie and see him progress from a super-fit soldier in an elite commando unit to the unstoppable mass of power he becomes, we focus less on who he is and more on what he can do.
To sum it up, he is a one-man wrecking crew! This guy definitely makes use of his proportional advantages and won’t hesitate to throw his weight around in order to stop Wolverine from progressing further. He’s a blast to fight against and was pretty fun to work on as a whole!
The first thing we did was build all-new arms, complete with nice fingers. The next thing we needed to do was change the face a bit, sculpting more details like sagging skin, thicker jowls…little things that the scan just couldn’t pick up on.
Once those finer details were completed, we built a low-polygon cage, or shell, around the scanned actor and rendered that high-detail information to the surface of the low-polygon cage. Once the rendering work was done, Joe Koberstein painted in colors for the clothing and flesh textures, finding a great mix of dirty and stained cloth to complement the varicose veins, and matted hair across the arms and face.
The Blob battle is a great distraction from the clawing action in the rest of the game and hopefully provides some laughs along the way. Have fun fighting him. And remember: “Nothing moves the Blob!”

Nice, he looks great, really massibe and powerful, look at wolverine’s health bar, he cant stand a chance lol, but i was wondering, are we gonna fight him when he is a “super-fit soldier in an elite commando unit” or only when he is “the unstoppable mass of power”

Well Wolverine has regen at least. It look more like the latter, if you remember one of the devs favorite quotes mentioned something about 1,200 lbs ago or something like that

Well see he can create his own gravitational field or something like that so it’s almost impossible to move him although Hulk, Juggernaut, and Strong Guy have moved him. Colossus also picked up the piece of ground Blob was standing on

Jean Grey has also levitated him while he was off-balance.
If both he’s feet arent on the ground, he can be lifted by stroooong people I believe.

It looks like you will have to move quickly in and out to do damage and avoid getting hit too often or Wolvie will be going down.

I’m gonna just come out and say it- that’s the most realistic fat person i’ve ever seen in a game. Well not ‘realistic’ but you get what i mean. Can’t wait to beat him up.

The Blob is so disgusting and would be a bitch to fight. He is superstrong, pretty much invunerable and could slurp you into his blobby gut and suffocate you like he did Wonderman in WCA.

The Blob fight was fun but not as hard as I thought it would be. I enjoyed riding him through the grocery store and smashing up everything in sight. But he was pretty easy to avoid and beat.

Bob was hilarious I loved him a complete slob in all the scenes of the word! Took a while to get passed him but I kicked his fat butt in the end
